Introduction to First Pass AI Analysis (FPA)
First Pass AI Analysis (First Pass or FPA for short) is a Citizen Space AI analysis tool that can be added onto your current subscription. First Pass gives your analysts a head start on every response. The moment a response is submitted, it is read and analysed by Claude, a leading AI model from Anthropic, and the results are written straight back into the response record in Citizen Space. By the time an analyst opens the response, a draft summary, sentiment assessment, keywords, content checks and suggested tags are already there.
It is called First Pass for a reason. It does the first read so your team does not start from a blank page. Analysts review, correct and decide. The AI never has the final word. The rest of this document explains, feature by feature, how each output is actually produced.

What the AI is given to work with
Every feature depends on the same starting point, so it is worth explaining once. When a response is submitted, First Pass assembles a complete picture before any analysis happens:
- The activity itself. The title and overview of the activity, so the AI understands what respondents were being asked about.
- The questions and their options. For every question the respondent answered, First Pass includes the question wording and the answer options that were available. This is what makes selections meaningful: the AI does not just see that 'Option B' was ticked, it sees the question was 'Do you support the proposed changes?' and Option B was 'Strongly oppose'.
- The answers, with personal details removed. Fields for names, contact details, addresses and demographics are excluded before analysis. First Pass analyses what respondents said, not who they are.
One more mechanism matters for everything that follows:
First Pass does not ask the AI to write a free-form report that software then tries to interpret. Instead, the AI is required to fill in a fixed, structured form: a set of defined fields with defined rules for what each may contain. Sentiment, for example, can only ever be one of four permitted values, and tags can only ever come from your predefined list. If the AI cannot complete the form properly, First Pass writes nothing rather than something malformed. This is what keeps the outputs consistent from response to response.
When things go wrong
If the AI cannot produce a properly structured analysis, or the AI service is temporarily unavailable, First Pass does not degrade into guesswork. It writes nothing, and retries the analysis automatically in the background. A response is only ever updated with a complete, validated analysis.
Privacy and data handling
Personal and demographic fields are excluded from analysis. Respondent answers are never written into system logs. All AI processing takes place on AWS Bedrock within Amazon’s Australian regions (for AU or NZ customers), or UK/EU (for respective UK and EU customers) regions, so response data is processed onshore, and results are written only into your own Citizen Space site. Activity responses are not used to train AI models.
Your analysts stay in control
Every output described above lands in an ordinary, editable field on the response. Analysts can amend, overwrite or delete any of it. Your team also chooses which features to use: any output field you remove from an activity is simply skipped. First Pass changes where your analysts start, not who decides.
