URL - shorten
Each activity (whether it's an Online Survey, Email/Postal Activity, Link or Offline Activity)you create within Citizen Space will have a URL that you can share and promote.
This URL (also known as a web address) is made of different component parts. You can edit part of the URL to make it shorter and can also shorten the entire URL using a link-shortening service.
Below are examples of a public activity's URL and a private activity's URL with text explaining the different URL components:
Public activity URL
1. This identifies that your site is securely protected (not editable).
2. This is your Citizen Space domain (not editable).
3. This is the name of the Workspace that the activity is assigned to (not editable).
4. This section is the title given to the activity when it was created, and it is editable.
Private activity URL
1. This identifies that your site is securely protected (not editable)
2. This is your domain (not editable)
3. This is the name of the Workspace that the activity is assigned to (not editable)
4. As this is a private activity, this section consists of a random set of numbers and/or letters. This is not editable.
How to shorten the URL
All these components together can make for quite a long URL. There are a few things you can do to shorten it:
- To shorten the entire URL use a link-shortening service, such as bit.ly or ow.ly. Twitter also has an automatic link shortening feature.
- Edit the final section of the URL on a public activity (up to 50 characters).
- When setting up your Citizen Space site use short Workspace names (not editable once the activity has been created).
- Have your IT department create a short URL from your own website - something like 'countycouncil.gov.uk/activity-name' that redirects to your activity.
